Furious Noni Madueke has to be restrained by Chelsea coaches and team-mates after confronting referee Craig Pawson over VAR decision in 2-2 thriller

Chelsea’s Noni Madueke had to be dragged away by the Chelsea coaching staff and his teammates after complaining to referee Craig Pawson following the Blues 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

The striker was incensed after Chelsea were denied a late winner when Axel Disasi’s injury time goal was ruled by a VAR check.

The French defender thought he had won all three points, when he headed home a 97th minute winner after the Blues had come back from 2-0 down at Villa Park.

However, the jubilant celebrations were stopped short when a VAR review spotted a foul in the build ip to the goal.

Benoit Badiashile appeared to shove Diego Carlos in the back as the ball was dropping into the box before he crossed the ball into Disasi for the goal.

After checking the on-pitch monitor Craig Pawson chalked the goal off leaving Chelsea perplexed at the decision and the anger ran over after the final whistle.

The striker was booked for his complaints as tempers boiled over, as he was dragged away from the referee by a number of the club’s coaches as well as his teammates.

In the aftermath Madueke was asked about the goal, which he believed should have been given.

He told BBC Sport: ‘Should it have been three points? Yes. Do I think the goal should have stood? Yes. Nothing else to say about the situation.’

Aston Villa had raced into a 2-0 first half lead following a Marc Cucrella own goal inside four minutes and a strike from Morgan Rodgers.

However, Chelsea rallied in the second half and turned the game around, thanks firstly to Madueke and then a Conor Gallagher equaliser.

It was a second half performance that Madueke praised, but admitted they needed to start better in games.

Adding: ‘We need to play better at times in phases of the game. We have an abundance of quality and when we fire we’re a match for any team. The last game was terrible. For 70 minutes today the team were outstanding.’
