Gary Neville has slammed rumours that Manchester United are set to extend Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane’s contracts.

This comes ahead of the January transfer window, the first since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial takeover of the Red Devils.

Taking to X to vent his frustrations, Neville urged United to start fresh when discussing the potential of his former side renewing the contracts of Lindelof and Varane.

‘If United are looking to renew Lindelof and Varane (on reduced terms) I’m worried,’ he admitted.

‘We have to start afresh as much as possible.’

Neville continued to explain the reason that he’d be worried with the club extending Lindelof and Varane’s deals beyond the end of the season.

He said:  ‘Whilst these 2 aren’t bad players by any stretch, a message must be sent to everyone inside and outside of the club that it’s not going to tolerate the levels over the last few years.’

Erik ten Hag has struggled with injuries in his defence this season, seeing Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire make up the partnership at the back for the majority of the season.

They had previously been linked with a move to sign OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, however it appears that Tottenham could complete the move despite Ratcliffe owning both Nice and a stake in United.

It was not just the rumours surrounding Varane and Lindelof’s futures that Neville criticised as he also slammed their transfer strategy in recent years.

‘The £85m spent on Antony is the one that is going to stand out,’ he said. ‘He’s obviously nowhere near that level but even £70m on Rasmus Hojlund is a lot of money, £55m on Mason Mount, £60m for Casemiro on a five-year deal is a lot of money.

‘There’s a lot of deals you can start to look at with a glass half empty when you look at the recruitment.’

Man United will no doubt have to get their recruitment right if they are to recover their form after picking up just two wins in eight matches in December.
