Jamie Carragher slammed Luton defender Teden Mengi for ‘gifting’ Everton a penalty in their crucial clash on Friday night.

Mengi had hold of the Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during a corner in the first-half at Kenilworth Road.

The challenge was spotted by the VAR and referee Tim Robinson was advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Robinson awarded a penalty and Dominic Calvert-Lewin hammered his spot kick down the middle to give the visitors the lead in the 24th minute.

Carragher was not impressed by the challenge.

He said on Sky Sports: ‘What on earth is Teden Mengi playing at?

‘Crucial game in Luton’s battle against relegation and he’s just gifting penalties like that.

‘Absolutely ridiculous.’

Gary Neville added: ‘Yes it was (a penalty).

‘I’ve got a very high bar when it comes to defenders trying to block, and to hold. I used to do it myself, but this just isn’t clever at all.

‘From every angle, he’s left the VAR with nowhere to go.

‘Look at the force on his face. he’s having to really struggle. Jarrad Branthwaite goes down in the end to get the penalty, but absolutely (a penalty).’
