Liverpool have identified Ruben Amorim and Julian Nagelsmann as potential targets should favourite Xabi Alonso decline the move to Anfield.
The Reds were quick to make their interest in Alonso clear, with the Leverkusen boss enjoying an unbeaten season in the Bundesliga.
According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are exploring options outside Alonso, as he is said to be closer to a Bayern Munich move, rather than to succeed Jurgen Klopp.
Ruben Amorim, the current manager of Sporting CP, along with Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, have both been lined up as potential alternatives to Alonso.
Amorim, 39, despite having less than five years of managerial experience – and none beyond Portugal – led Sporting to their first title in 19 years, beating dominant Benfica and Porto in the Portuguese league.

Julian Nagelsmann – the current Germany boss – has also been named as a target on the managerial shortlist.
Nagelsmann was sacked at Bayern Munich in March 2023, though was quickly appointed to take over the national team from the sacked Hansi Flick.
Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from the club in January, after admitting that he was ‘running out of energy’.
Having won almost every trophy there is, Klopp revealed that his departure would be a break in managing, and that he ‘wouldn’t manage another team in England apart from Liverpool’.
Assuring that he wouldn’t do a Sir Alex Ferguson and return to the club, Liverpool have been left searching for replacements.
Xabi Alonso was quickly identified as a top target for the Reds.
Looking on track to lead Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title, it seems as though the Spaniard could be tempted with staying in Germany to take over from Thomas Tuchel who will depart at the end of the season.
