Former Liverpool players Jamie Redknapp and Daniel Sturridge have urged the club to prioritise extending the contracts of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold at the end of the season.

Anfield is set to be a hub of change in the summer with Arne Slot expected to replace Jurgen Klopp as Red’s boss while the club also attempt to bring in new recruits and sell-on other players.

Klopp’s departure has thrust the immediate futures of some of the club’s most-celebrated star’s into doubt as they weigh up whether to stay at Liverpool under a new manager or move on.

Egyptian forward Salah was the subject of a £200m chase last summer and Saudi Arabian clubs are likely to return for the 31-year-old again in the coming months, while Alexander-Arnold’s contract is also running down.

Sturridge urged Liverpool chiefs to tie local icon Alexander-Arnold down to a fresh long-term deal, with his current contract expiring in June 2026 and rival teams likely to show interest in the 25-year-old.

Former Reds striker, Sturridge issued a warning over Alexander-Arnold’s Anfield future following Sunday’s 4-2 home win over Tottenham, telling Sky Sports: ‘That’s a tough one, because I think all the top clubs around Europe are going to be sniffing

‘Then you’ve got Liverpool, who, I think they’ve got to do everything in their power to get him [Alexander-Arnold] to sign on a dotted line, because you can’t lose a man of Trent, you know, he’s from the city.

‘You’re talking guys like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who have represented one club and and I think that’s what you kind of want for Trent.

‘Of course, Mo [Salah] and Virg [Van Dijk], they’re guys that, you know, they’ve brought in. They’ve been absolutely world class for the football club. But the local lad in Trent who’s become a superstar at the football clubs, he’s the one that you want to make sure,’ he added.

Alexander-Arnold has developed into one of the world’s best fullbacks during Klopp’s Liverpool reign, lifting the Premier League and Champions League alongside other domestic honours.

However, if no extension is agreed during the upcoming off-season then Liverpool would need to look at selling Alexander-Arnold or risk losing him on a free transfer the following year.

Meanwhile, Salah’s situation is likely to hinge on whether the club’s top scorer this season wants to see out the final 12 months of his contract or make a move in the summer.

‘The one thing is, when you look at the contract situation, there are players that have got like, obviously Trent and Virgil Van Dijk they’ve only got a year left of their contract,’ said Redknapp.

‘I think I won’t be surprised if Mo Salah goes in the summer. I can see that now he’s 32 in June. I wouldn’t be surprised if, and I think with Liverpool, maybe getting the money, the right money, and they’re not going to say they’re going to sell him.

‘I could just see looked like he was going to go last year,’ he added.
