Manchester United prioritize transfer talks with £100m star for the summer following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival

Manchester United are said to be opening talks with Benfica over a deal to sign teenage superstar Joao Neves during the summer. 

The holding midfielder has become hot property after establishing himself as a mainstay in Roger Schmidt’s side this season.

The youngster – who turned 19 in September – has made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese champions.

He’s also earned his first three international caps, making his senior debut for Portugal during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.  

According to The Mirror, Neves is viewed as a priority investment following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival at the club.

However, Neves – who has made nine Champions League appearances – has a €120million buy-out clause worth £103m. 

Although, Manchester United believe Neves is worth the investment and have reportedly engaged in conversations over a summer deal. 

But, Benfica manager Schmidt has made it clear Neves will not be leaving the club during the January transfer window. 

He said: ‘We are halfway through the season and we have big goals. We certainly won’t let any of these players leave. We need them and no one wants to leave, so there’s no question.’ 

United were transformed when they signed fellow Portugal international Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.

The 29-year-old midfielder is now the Manchester United captain having scored 47 goals in 143 Premier League games for the club.

However, Neves has a different profile to Fernandes – playing usually as a defensive midfielder or a central midfielder, with tackling and interceptions a strength
