Darwin Nunez scored twice to help Liverpool pull off a remarkable late turnaround to beat Newcastle 2-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

The first half could not have gone much worse for the Reds. Trent Alexander-Arnold was fortunate to escape an early red card as he dragged down Anthony Gordon just moments after being booked for throwing the ball away. His next mistake didn’t go unpunished.

The full back let a pass from Mohamed Salah slip under his boot, allowing Gordon to race clear and put Newcastle in front. Virgil van Dijk was then sent off just three minutes later after taking out Aleksander Isak as he looked to be running through on goal.

Newcastle had chances to put the game to bed, but Liverpool stayed in the match and then Nunez took centre stage.

Having come off the bench midway through the second half, he got Liverpool level in the 81st minute as he latched onto a through ball and fired into the bottom corner. As the game ticked into added time, he popped up again, slotting past Nick Pope after being played through to seal a stunning victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
