Paul Merson has delivered a scathing assessment of Todd Boehly’s speech on Chelsea’s progress, claiming he is worried about the Blues owner.

Boehly came out this past week to say that Chelsea’s recent form is proof the club’s plan is ‘coming together’ under Mauricio Pochettino.

Speaking at a Sportico conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Boehly said: ‘We’ve seen the last two and a half games… in the second half at Aston Villa [2-2 draw] and Tottenham [2-0 win] and West Ham [5-0 win] where we played beautiful football.

‘It was so fluid, it was exactly the way we drew it up, when we came out of the back, built up and moved up the pitch, [it was] very organised and the number of shots we had.

‘In those two and a half games, you could really start to see what we were working on coming together.’

In response, Merson said: ‘I was quite worried, I was quite shocked. The way he was talking about this is the was we see it, this is what we put together.

‘They just went out and bought whoever was available and done well on YouTube.

‘Two and a half games ago they were getting absolutely destroyed by arsenal. That’s the benchmark. The benchmark is arsenal and they are a million miles away Arsenal and they are a million points behind arsenal.

‘You cannot get carried away with that. I didn’t like what I was hearing. It was like that’s it now don’t need to buy any players next season. This is the team they’re gonna be alright, nah that won’t be the case.
