The British Transport Police have confirmed that ‘investigations are ongoing’ after a video of Sheffield Wednesday fans lighting a flare on a train went viral.
The video began circulating social media platform X on Sunday night, with two clips of the shocking incident coming to light after the side’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City.
The first video showed a carriage – believed to be a Cross Country service – filled with blue smoke and one supporter holding the flare as it released the fumes.
Chanting could be heard throughout the entire video and multiple supporters could be seen standing on the seats or tables inside the carriage.
The thickness of the smoke made it difficult to see beyond the first two rows – however a crowd of people sat down on the train could be seen at points in the clip.
Meanwhile, in a second video that emerged online, Sheffield Wednesday supporters were seen aboard the same train – this time chanting about the club.

Some fellow travelers could be seen sitting down in the carriage as the flare was released
With some, yet again, stood on top of the chairs and tables in the carriage, they sang: ‘Hello, hello, we are the Wednesday boys!’.
Mail Sport have since reached out to the British Transport Police who confirmed that an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
In a statement, they said: ‘We received a text report of a smoke flare being released onboard a train at 7.15pm on Saturday evening (29 March).
‘Officers met the train at Birmingham New Street station and investigations are still ongoing’.
Mail Sport understands that no one has been arrested at this time.
Meanwhile, a Sheffield Wednesday spokesperson said: ‘Sheffield Wednesday roundly condemn this dangerous and unacceptable behaviour.
‘We are currently working together with the British Transport Police to identify those responsible, who will be subject to full club sanctions.
‘The club have a zero tolerance policy regarding this or any kind of supporter conduct that tarnishes the good name of Sheffield Wednesday, whether following the team at home or away fixtures.’

Elsewhere, a rail industry source told Mail Sport: ‘What happened was so dangerous. It could have burnt the whole carriage down.
‘That stuff is toxic and shouldn’t be breathed in, especially if you have a respiratory condition.’
It remains to be seen whether the club will take action against the supporters prior to their next Championship match which sees them take on Hull City on Saturday.
Wednesday are currently 12th in the league table following the 1-1 draw with Cardiff, where Michael Ihiekwe scored a crucial second-half equaliser.
