Mason Greenwood will wear the No 12 shirt at Getafe after the Spanish club signed the Manchester United forward on loan.

Greenwood, 21, has been given the opportunity to rebuild his career in LaLiga after he was told he had no future at Old Trafford.

Getafe have now revealed in a social media post that Greenwood, who wore No 11 at United, will wear 12 for the remainder of the season.

Greenwood hasn’t played competitive football since January 2022, when he was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape.

All charges against him were dropped in February 2023 but United conducted their own internal investigation and mutually agreed that Greenwood would leave the club.

Getafe posted a video of jubilant fans on social media after news broke he was to join the Madrid-based club for the season. The club finished 15th in Spain’s top-flight last season.

There was also interest in signing Greenwood from Lazio, Olympiacos and Red Star Belgrade before he made the move to Spain.

Lazio held extensive talks over signing the forward on deadline day last Friday but ran out of time to complete a deal with United.

The Italian club’s president, Claudio Lotito, claimed Greenwood wanted to sign for them but United didn’t sign the paperwork in time. ‘I tried until the last minute,’ Lotito said.

The Athletic have reported that Greenwood’s loan deal contains a break clause in January should Getafe wish to cut it short.

The Spanish club will not be paying a fee for the English forward, but will cover a small contribution for his £75,000-a-week wages for the duration of the loan.

Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas has defended the club, but admitted it was a ‘delicate situation’.

‘It is a very delicate situation to trivialise that issue,’ Bordalas said.

‘Everyone knows what happened and appropriate measures were taken. Everyone knows how it ended, with a non-convictory sentence.

‘He is a footballer of a very high level and arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm.’

Clubs in the big spending Saudi Pro League had initially been viewed as potential suitors for Greenwood.

According to the Athletic, the league were wary of a backlash if Greenwood was signed by one of their clubs.

The concerns came as clubs seek to develop their women’s league and bid for the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup.
