Ruben Amorim Confirms Commitment to Sporting Lisbon for Next Season Despite West Ham Talks and Premier League Interest

Ruben Amorim has announced he will remain at Sporting Lisbon next season after leading the club to Liga Portugal success.

Sporting were crowned champions with two games remaining after Benfica were defeated 2-0 by Famalicao on Sunday.

The triumph marks Amorim’s second league title since arriving at the club in 2020, having previously lifted the trophy in the 2020-21 season.

Despite weeks of speculation linking him with a move to a Premier League club this summer, Amorim confirmed that he would remain at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

‘I’m staying at Sporting.’ Amorim said via Fabrizio Romano.

‘I’m under contract and it’s a special moment for me, for the club’. Now we will try to win the third title together. Let’s try to make it happen.’

After enjoying an impressive start to his burgeoning managerial career in his native country, Amorim became the subject of various links to Premier League clubs earlier this season.

When Liverpool missed out on top managerial target Xabi Alonso, Amorim was reportedly considered for the soon-to-be-vacant managerial position at Anfield before the Reds opted instead to move for Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

Last month Amorim travelled to London to hold talks with West Ham as David Moyes’ position at the club appears increasingly tenuous.

The 39-year-old later admitted holding discussions with the Premier League club was a ‘mistake’.

‘It was a mistake. The timing was completely wrong,’ he said.

‘I’m always asking my players to be respectful, and I wasn’t, even if I informed the club before. I’m so sorry and I apologise to fans, club and players’.
