Scoring in My Favourite Shirt for the Club I Supported as a Child: Rangers Home 1988-89 – Andy Gray

My highlight as a kid every birthday and Christmas would be tearing open the wrapping paper to discover the kit of Rangers, my idols.

As a boy, I watched them win cup finals in front of 130,000 at Hampden.

To finally pull on their royal blue shirt as a player at nearly 33 was special, particularly when I scored my first goal — a header of course — against St Mirren.

I wasn’t there long but we won the league in 1988-89, the first of nine in a row, so I am part of the club’s history.

A funny memory was being called in by my manager at West Brom, Ron Atkinson, to say the team I’d always wanted to play for had made a bid.

I joked I was too old for Real Madrid — when he confirmed it was Rangers, I jumped in my car to sign.
