A ball boy in Scotland was bizarrely sent off after an incident involving Rangers defender Leon Balogun.

After just eight minutes, the ball went out of play with the score at 0-0 as Balogun jogged over to take the throw in.

Balogun sarcastically applauded before referee Nick Walsh took actions into his own hands.

Video footage has shown the incident in full, with the ball boy escorted off the pitch.

The referee appeared to signal for those in the stadium to remove the ball boy, with him soon being escorted out of the stadium.

In hilarious fashion, Rangers fans booed the youngster as he was being taken away.

During the incident,  Sky Sports commentator Rory Hamilton said: ‘I think the booing is for the substitution of a ballboy!

‘Our friend with the mohawk is being moved somewhere else.’

Football fans took to social media to react to the incident as one joked: ‘That ball boy with the Mohawk is a future St Mirren captain me thinks.’

Another compared his hair style to former Celtic player Stephane Mahe before saying: ‘All makes sense now!’

A different fan joked that his hairstyle was more like former Napoli star Marek Hamsik.

One user on X slammed the decision to remove the ball boy as they said: ‘Can’t believe St Mirren moved a ball boy because he had a bit of fun when rangers went to take a nothing throw on.’

Another Scottish fan joked that Rangers would release a statement about the incident, while other fans were highly critical of the away supporters.

‘The onion bears are so scary, attacking a young St Mirren ball boy and forcing him to be removed from the stadium for his own safety,’ wrote a Celtic supporter.

‘Scotland’s shame.’

Rangers’ 2-1 win over St Mirren saw them apply the pressure on Celtic in the race for the title.
