Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has seemingly taken aim at the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital regime following his dismal second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard, who made 648 appearances as a player for the Blues and is the clubโ€™s all time record goalscorer, returned to west London in an interim capacity in April 2023 following the abrupt sacking of Graham Potter.

The Englishman had been fired by Everton less than three months prior, but he accepted Chelseaโ€™s offer to lead the team until the end of the 2022-23 campaign after the clubโ€™s turbulent start to life under new ownership.

However, Lampard endured a miserable second stint in the Stamford Bridge dugout, accumulating just one win in 11 games as the Blues slumped to a 12th place finish in the Premier League – their second-worst in the competitionโ€™s history.

Despite his failings, Lampard believes the environment at Stamford Bridge was entirely wrong following his return to Chelsea.

During an interview with Sky Sports, Lampard explained the difficulties he was faced with upon his return to Chelsea in 2023.

โ€œI saw things that I know cannot be right at elite football and that’s the truth,โ€ he admitted.

โ€œI didn’t love working in that short period because it’s hard to lay down an idea when you’re going to be leaving but Chelsea will always be a massive club in my life.

โ€œBut when I understand the standards of Chelsea – in that period of time a lot of players were in transition of maybe leaving and some problems and motivation were a problem – in an interim period you can’t really affect that.โ€

Lampard added: โ€œWhen you see the results of it, I’m experienced enough to know what’s right and what’s wrong and basic things in a training ground on a pitch.

โ€œI didn’t learn anything tactical but it did reinforce my beliefs of all my experiences of when you know what a group is really fighting in the same direction – how strong that can be and when it’s not, it can be really challenging.โ€
