Jamie Carragher has been criticised for his comments questioning how Cole Palmer could ‘get out’ of Chelsea. having penned an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer renewed his deal in August last year until 2033 after a sensational first season with Chelsea but speculation has continued to persist about his future, with his impressive form continuing into this campaign.

Although Palmer is currently on a ten-match run without a goal or assist, the 22-year-old has been Chelsea’s best player this year, prompting Carragher to question whether the England star would grow frustrated if the Blues missed out on Champions League football next season.

However, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan accused Carragher of ‘making noise for noise sake’ and insisted Palmer would have been aware of the pros and cons behind signing such a long extension at Chelsea.

“I’m sure there’s plenty of people around Cole Palmer that would’ve been able to give him the right advice,” Jordan said on talkSPORT. “Ultimately, players want to sign long-term contracts that are predominantly based upon, perhaps preserving some value for the club.

“Agents aren’t going to be encouraging Cole Palmer to sign long-term contracts with Chelsea, because agents are going to make their money by moving him somewhere else. So the fact he’s got an agent and he’s signed a long-term contract might give you some indication that people have thought about this moderately carefully.”

Palmer Chelsea situation compared to Steven Gerrard at Liverpool

Palmer’s form this season has helped Chelsea push for the top four in the Premier League but Carragher suggested on The Overlap’s Fan Debate that the youngster may lose patience with his side as he is ‘so much better’ than everyone.

Carragher said: “I commentated on Brighton vs Chelsea in the league a month ago. I’m a big fan of Cole Palmer, and he played two passes early on, but the longer the game went on, you could see the frustration with his team-mates.

“It reminded me of Stevie [Gerrard] at Liverpool at times, because he was so much better than everyone else and he got frustrated. Stevie was a local player, but he was never going to leave, whereas Cole Palmer isn’t.

“This is when I go back to those eight-year contracts, and whether they are good for the club and players.

“If you’re Cole Palmer, who’s got six or seven years left on his deal, and he should be playing for a team looking to win the Champions League, how does he get out?”
