Darwin Nunez’s chaotic spell with Liverpool could end in the summer, with the striker dropping the biggest hint yet that he could leave the Anfield club amid rumours that Barcelona are targeting the Uruguay international as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Nunez was left out of the starting XI for Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, with Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz preferred in attack alongside Mohamed Salah.

Quite how the cash-strapped Camp Nou outfit might fund a move is another issue entirely.

Nunez erases Liverpool memories

Nunez has deleted every picture of Liverpool on his Instagram account, which has more than 4 million followers. The only images left are those wearing the Uruguay or Benfica shirt. It appears to be a clear signal.

This has come about entirely unexpectedly but it is perhaps not a coincidence that exit rumours relating to the South American star have come as it has been confirmed that Salah is set to remain at the club for at least another season.

Equally, it may be that Arne Slot, the incoming replacement for manager Jurgen Klopp, has said that he does not trust the mercurial striker to lead the line for the Reds next season.

Certainly, the disappearance of any trace of Liverpool FC from Nunez’s Instagram account has comes at a juncture that is surely too much to be just a pure coincidence and will only fuel the rumours that he is on his way out of the club after a couple of frustrating years at Anfield.
