Manchester United have reached an agreement with Newcastle to allow them to appoint Dan Ashworth as their sporting director in a move that will bring to an end a long-running saga and should allow the Red Devils to finally kickstart their transfer window.

David Ornstein reports that Man Utd have come to an accord with their Premier League rivals over a compensation payment for Ashworth after weeks of bickering over the fee.

Newcastle had been holding out for a payment of £15 million for the director but United well offering a fee well below that valuation. It is unclear how much Man Utd will pay for the 53-year-old.

Ashworth, who previously excelled in a similar role with Brighton, is now expected to start his role with Man Utd “immediately”.

As reported by Ornstein: “He is set to have overall responsibility for football performance, recruitment and operations at the 20-time champions of England, with technical director Jason Wilcox reporting to him.”

Exciting days ahead at Man Utd

Manchester United have made slow progress in the transfer window to date, despite being one of the Premier League clubs most in need of change.

The Red Devils took their time over a post-season review, which ultimately concluded that Erik ten Hag should remain as manager of the club.

Following these delays, though, things are now expected to step up at Man Utd.

Ashworth’s arrival will represent a huge boost for the Old Trafford club, who are also closing in on their first signing of the Ineos era in the form of Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

An agreement is expected between the Netherlands international and the Red Devils imminently, while Man Utd will have to find an agreement over a fee with Bayern if they are to complete a move for the former Ajax star.
