Inter Miami’s pursuit of Marcos Rojo has failed, according to a report.
David Beckham’s Major League Soccer franchise are preparing for the 2024 season, having failed to reach the playoffs last year due to a dire start to the campaign under Phil Neville that not even the arrivals of Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets could salvage.
However, Miami are keen to put on a show in 2024. With Messi available for a full season and decorated head coach Tata Martino able to oversee pre-season, the Fort Lauderdale-based club could plot a charge on the title. To do this, Liverpool and Barcelona legend Luis Suarez has already been signed.
Despite MLS’s stringent roster rules, more star signings are planned. One of them was Marcos Rojo. The former Argentina international used to be a regular for Manchester United in the Premier League, but the veteran has now snubbed a reunion with Messi.
Rojo rejects Miami
That’s at least according to TyC Sports, which claims that the 33-year-old wants to remain with Boca Juniors at least until the summer. His current deal with the Argentine giants expires in the winter of 2025. Rojo left Man Utd after six-and-a-half years in February 2021 to join Boca.
It is claimed that Messi had a big role to play in Miami’s interest in the defender, having played together with him for the Argentine national team. The reigning Ballon d’Or winner was said to be keen to reunite with his compatriot.
Miami had also recently been linked with another of Messi’s former teammates in Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto. The right-back admitted that he would like to eventually play in MLS but his current plan is to extend his expiring Blaugrana contract for at least another year.
