The future of Real Madrid legend Luka Modric remains unresolved with the 38-year-old’s contract due to expire at the end of the season.

It was around this time last year that Modric and fellow veteran midfielder Toni Kroos put pen to paper on one-year extensions, and while Kroos has again signed on for another year at Santiago Bernabeu, there has been no such movement regarding a new deal for Modric.

Madrid’s dependence on the Croatia record caps-holder has lessened this season but his experience and class have proven vital in the latter stages of the Champions League.

Modric has made impactful cameos from the bench against Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the quarter finals and semi finals respectively.

Although no longer a guaranteed starter, it is expected Modric will have a part to play in the Wembley final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1.

The playmaker will be hoping that it’s not his Real Madrid swansong, having played over 500 times for los Blancos to date.

While there are reportedly offers on the table from former club Dinamo Zagreb as well as in Saudi Arabia, it is believed Modric favours staying in the Spanish capital.

Deadline looms in Modric and Madrid talks

Now comes the news that a key date is looming in discussions between Modric and Madrid bosses.

Agent Vlado Lemic was contacted by football website Koora, and he claimed next week represents a crucial period in talks.

“So far there is nothing clear about Modric’s future with Real Madrid. Next week things will be clearer for us,” he said.

“Real Madrid is Modric’s home and together we will decide what is best.”

Modric joined Madrid from Tottenham in 2012 and has won 25 major trophies with the Spanish giants – becoming the club’s most-decorated player alongside Nacho, Karim Benzema and Marcelo by clinching his fourth LaLiga title last week.

If he ends up leaving, then expect Kylian Mbappe to take over his iconic No.10 shirt.
