The mood at Manchester United currently is worse than it was in the final days of Jose Mourinho’s reign, with a damning report on the state of the Old Trafford apparently putting the final nail in the coffin of Erik ten Hag as manager.

Man Utd tackle Arsenal in a Premier League clash on Sunday, with the Red Devils eighth in the standings and looking likely to miss out on European football next season unless they can overcome Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

There was a peak at how bad the situation really is as the team capitulated to a 4-0 loss against Crystal Palace on Monday, and now the Daily Mail claims that the mood in the camp has hit “rock bottom” – eclipsing even the miserable end to Mourinho’s tenure at Old Trafford.

The report claims: “At United there has been a feeling for some time that Ten Hag is on borrowed time, which in itself is undermining his authority. The mood at Carrington is said to have sunk as low as at any time in the final days under Mourinho and Solskjaer.”

The Portuguese, in particular, was known for being a thorny character, leading him to fall out with many people around him.

Could Ten Hag be spared?

It is reiterated, however, that Ten Hag could be spared by the fact that there is no obvious replacement for him on the market presently.

FootballTransfers understands, however, that England manager Gareth Southgate will leave his post following Euro 2024 to join Man Utd.

Certainly, the attitude of Ten Hag’s players in Monday’s embarrassing loss to Palace suggests that his squad believe they will leave at the end of the season.

With Premier League matches to come against Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton in the next week before Man City in the FA Cup final, there is at least time for the Dutchman to re-write his Man Utd obituary if this is indeed to be the end.
