Wrexham announces squad changes for next season as team celebrates in Las Vegas following promotion: Club captain and seven others released, two ex-Premier League players to stay.

Wrexham have revealed a number of players, including the club captain, have been released by the club.

The Hollywood-owned side have been celebrating promotion from League Two out in Las Vegas once again as their impressive rise up the football pyramid continued following promotion to the fourth tier last season.

Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have rewarded the squad following an excellent season with a trip to the States, but for some it will be bitter sweet following the publication of the club’s retained list.

Club captain Luke Young, who has been at the club since 2018, is one of eight players that have been released following the conclusions of their contracts, a list that also includes long-throw specialist Ben Tozer.

Two former Premier League players are set to stay on, meanwhile, with James McClean triggering an automatic extension and forward Steven Fletcher offered a new deal.

That total wasn’t enough to win the League Two title, as Stockport held them off to become champions of the division, but Wrexham nonetheless earned promotion by a comfortable gap of eight points.

Naturally, however, lower league clubs face a number of tough decisions at the end of every season when contracts come to an end, with Wrexham revealing their retained list on Friday morning.

Alongside Young and Tozer, Aaron Hayden, Rob Lainton, Callum McFadzean and Jordan Tunnicliffe have been let go.

Owen Cushion and Dan Davies complete the list of players who will have to look for new clubs ahead of next season.

Fletcher, meanwhile, is likely to sign a new deal, and has been offered terms to stay on alongside Mark Howard and Aaron James.

The club also revealed a decision on Scott Butler will be made when he returns from his loan with Marine, while a number of young pros have also had deals extended.

Video footage from a nightclub in Las Vegas was shared to social media on Friday, showing Wrexham’s jubilant celebrations.

Having won the National League last season, Wrexham are riding a huge wave of success that was celebrated with a ‘monster’ all-expenses paid trip to Vegas – and the players have been treated to another visit as McClean shared photos of the squad flying out.

Last year Wrexham were spotted throwing huge pool parties while soaking up the sun alongside their famous chairman McElhenney and his wife Kaitlin Olson , though Reynolds stayed away from the action.
