10 boys and girls high school golfers to watch in the Springfield area this fall

Springfield High and Sacred Heart-Griffin each finished in the top six of the Class 2A boys golf state finals last fall.

They will largely usher in a new vanguard while Chatham Glenwood returns several key contributors from last season.

On the girls side, Rochester touts the past two winners of the Drysdale Junior golf tournament.

Here are some of the area’s top golfers to know this 2023 season, listed in alphabetical order.

BOYS GOLF

Cameron Appenzeller, Chatham Glenwood

The junior tied for 30th place in the Class 2A state finals at Weibring Golf Course in Normal after rounds of 79 and 77. Teammates Bradyn Sayarath, a senior, and Drew Downen, a junior, both followed in 65th place overall. Sayarath captured the individual Taylorville Regional title — just ahead of junior teammate Derek Dulceak (77) — en route to the team title prior to state. Earlier this summer, Glenwood won the inaugural Drysdale Cup at Bunn Golf Course featuring Appenzeller (74), senior Brock Bredehoft (76) and sophomore Brayden Mueller (83).
