Former Robstown pitcher Florencio Serrano is back playing baseball in the Coastal Bend for the first time since his freshman year of high school after being promoted to Double-A Frisco on Aug. 4.

The RoughRiders, in the Texas League with the Hooks, are currently in Corpus Christi for a six-game series at Whataburger Field.

Serrano’s journey to the Rangers organization started after his freshman season when he moved to Mexico to focus on baseball and help give his family a better life.

Serrano’s dedication to the game paid off after signing a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs in 2017 and eventually joined the Rangers organization in 2019.

“It’s been a blessing because I’ve been able to help my family,” Serrano said. “We grew up through some tough times so it’s just been a blessing. The Rangers have been good to me, and I’m happy to be here, especially since I’m from Texas.”

Serrano said returning to the Coastal Bend will also allow his mom and family to see him pitch for the first time in six years. Serrano was also able to visit his late-father’s gravesite and celebrate his son’s first birthday.

In fact, his family and currently Robstown baseball coach Elias Vasquez will be in attendance for Serrano, who hopes to pitch this week against the Hooks.

Serrano is one of five siblings with his younger brothers Jose and Roque currently playing baseball for Vasquez and the Pickers.

“It’s been six years so hopefully I can pitch and things go well,” Serrano said. “I’m looking forward to seeing my family and I’m also thankful for the blessings my pops has given me. I’m always going to be grateful and cherish our moments together. Hopefully when I pitch, he’s here watching me.”
