DETROIT — The Rays are calling up infielder Curtis Mead, their most advanced position player prospect.

Mead, a 22-year-old Australian, will join the team in Detroit for tonight’s game. He will take the roster spot opened when pitcher Shane McClanahan was placed on the injured list Thursday.

Mead recently returned to action with Triple-A Durham after missing six weeks with a small fracture in his left wrist.

In 46 games for Durham, he is hitting .291 with three homers, 28 RBIs and an .832 OPS. He has walked 28 times and struck out only 31 times.

He was acquired in November 2019 trade with the Phillies for left-handed pitcher Cristopher Sanchez.
