Aaron Rodgers wants to make something clear about his new contract: He isn’t some kind of a hero for saving the Jets $35 million on his new contract.
The way the future Hall of Fame quarterbacks sees it, they are in a partnership, the star player and his new team, and by saving Gang Green some cash in terms of the salary cap the next two years, he is creating flexibility for Gang Green to add players of significance, either now or later on down the road.
“It was the right thing to do,” Rodgers said on Tuesday. “This is going to be a few years partnership.”
The 39-year-old Rodgers reduced the money that he is owed in 2023 and 2024 from $110 million — as per the terms of his contract signed with the Packers — to a two-year, $75 million contract.
Rogers said he is open to playing more than two years, depending on how well his body holds up.
Rodgers also played down the extent of how much money he passed up on, saying he is well paid and has made plenty of money during his career.
He already is the highest-paid player in NFL history with $305.6 million in on-field earnings, according to Spotrac.
“I feel great about what I’m making. It wasn’t really a negotiation … it was an easy conversation between me and [general manager] Joe [Douglas], talking about the state of the team and the opportunities that could be out there.”
