Arsenal have officially released a whopping 17 players on free transfers after their contracts came to an end.

June 30 marks the official end of every season, a time when the contracts of nearly all European-based players expire.

Arsenal have overseen something of a cull this year as they released 17 players from their contracts at midnight on Monday going into Tuesday.

Who did Arsenal release on a free transfer?

Thomas Partey was the biggest star released on a free transfer. The Ghana international has been in talks for several months over an extension but failed to agree terms.

Arsenal have not yet announced his departure so there is still a glimmer of hope that he could yet sign a new contract but as of now he is a free agent.

Defender Kieran Tierney leaves Arsenal after six years on their books. He returns to Celtic after an injury-hit last few years at the club.

“It’ll be hard but it’s a happy goodbye,” said Tierney in his goodbye interview.

“I’ve loved it here, loved every minute of it. There are countless memories that are amazing for me; your debut is always special, and winning the FA Cup as well in the first season. It’s a great team, and I’m so close to some of the boys in there. I’ve been here a long time, so it’ll be sad but a happy goodbye.”

Raheem Sterling and Neto return to their parent clubs Chelsea and Bournemouth, respectively, after failing to make much of an impact during their one-year loans this past season.

Talented youngster Nathan Butler-Oyedeji is also released despite showing a lot of promise initially in his Arsenal career.

The other Arsenal players released are lesser-known names; Khayon Edwards, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Brian Okonkwo, Ismail Oulad M’Hand, Salah-Eddine Oulad M’Hand, Elian Quesada-Thorn, Jakai Fisher, Reece Clairmont, Romari Forde, Max Kuczynski, and Zacariah Shuaib.
