Ruben Amorim insisted he is ‘far from quitting’ Manchester United after plunging his long-term future at the club into doubt over the weekend.

After Sunday’s 2-0 defeat by West Ham, Manchester United’s 17th league defeat of the season, Amorim suggested he may need to leave if he cannot get a tune out of his underperforming players soon.

But speaking at Old Trafford on Wednesday afternoon, Amorim looked to ease supporters’ fears by insisting he has no plans to pack his bags just yet.

‘Since I arrived here I am always talking about the standards and I cannot see the team having these results, especially in the Premier League, and not say nothing, not take responsibility,’ he said.

‘I have a clear idea of what to do. I understand the problems of the team so I am far from quitting.

‘What I am saying is we need to perform. We have this season, in the future we need to perform or else they will change us.

Amorim claimed his role ‘should be given to a different person’ if results don’t improve

‘That is a normal thing. Especially after the match that was my feeling and it still is my feeling today.’

Amorim was speaking just a day after it emerged that he has personally funded the families of 30 backroom staff to go to next week’s Europa League final in Bilbao.

It has been a difficult season at Manchester United with hundreds of redundancies and Amorim felt now was a time to give back as a way to galvanise the club as one.

‘The situation is simple,’ Amorim said, explaining that had he not put the money up the players were eager to step in.

‘You know that we have a lot of things, people leaving, a lot of changing in the staff, and in these moments for our club sometimes it is hard to understand when to give, when to take, to respect the people that we are taking their jobs in certain moments to survive and rebuild.

‘It is complicated for the club to start giving to other members of staff, so it is a really hard position. Then, that situation was explained and in that moment my reaction was to help.

‘I am not a good guy, it is not going to change my life. To help the staff to be there, to be comfortable, a better staff for the final.

‘Then we talk to the players and the players have the same reaction in the same moment. Everyone wants the staff there, the families there, but it’s hard to manage things in our club so we did the simple thing.’
