With an East Region championship and a state doubles title, Terry Sanford enjoyed the most successful season of girls’ tennis in Cumberland County in 2023. For her efforts in leading the Bulldogs’ charge, senior captain Annie Lieberman is the Best of 910Preps Player of the Year in girls’ tennis.
Lieberman posted a 24-4 overall record this season, primarily as Terry Sanford’s No. 1 singles player, a spot where she went 17-3 as the Bulldogs rolled to their 15th state championship appearance and their first in the 3A classification.
The Bulldogs also claimed a state championship behind freshman Pauline Bui and sophomore Loren Galaviz — an NCHSAA record-tying seventh state doubles title and Terry Sanford’s first since 1996.
“The team itself has just been amazing,” coach Susan Brady said. “(The team) just knocked it out of the park … it was a great season.”

Lieberman, also a Best of 910Preps Girs’ Tennis Player of the Year as a freshman, is a multiple All American Conference singles champion and league Player of the Year.
“This is the dream team for me, and I wouldn’t change it, and I think we should be proud of ourselves despite the loss today,” the senior said after the Bulldogs fell to Lake Norman Charter in a 5-hour long 5-4 (7-3) tiebreaker for the state dual-team title. “We all stayed strong today and fought back despite the challenges, so I think we had a great season.”
