Everton 0-0 Aston Villa: Unai Emery’s Team Frustrated by VAR Decision, Miss Opportunity to Overtake Man City

admin

Everton 0-0 Aston Villa: Unai Emery had never managed a 0-0 draw during his 97 games in the Premier League heading into the clash at Goodison Park.

That record looked set to continue as Alex Moreno looked to have opened the scoring with a thunderous strike from the edge of the six-yard box to beat Jordan Pickford.

Immediately Everton players protested that there had been an offside in the build-up and a lengthy VAR check eventually confirmed their suspicions, with the goal ruled out with Bailey fractionally over the line.

Despite a slow start Villa continued to build in momentum, with Pickford called into to action just moments later; denying Bailey from close range at his near post.

Everton retained a threat of their own, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin found himself in a golden opportunity to end his dry spell in front of goal as he charged towards Emi Martinez on the brink of half time.

The Argentine responded with typical confidence in the one-on-one situation, denying Calvert-Lewin with his legs, before producing getting down low to his left to prevent James Garner’s subsequent effort.

After the interval the game grew in intensity as players from both side’s made their frustrations clear but genuine chances remained difficult for either team to come by.
