Uncovered: Wayne Rooney’s Plan to Balance BBC Euros Coverage with Pre-Season Training as Plymouth Boss

Wayne Rooney is set to have a busy summer as he will attempt to juggle his commitments to BBC’s broadcast coverage of the 2024 European Championships on top of his managerial duties as the new Plymouth boss.

It’s been a hectic few months already for the former Manchester United striker already, who first announced that he would be joining Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Roy Keane, Gil Scott and Jamie Carragher as a new host on Sky Sports’ podcast, The Overlap back in April.

Rooney has also been seen dipping his toes into the television world, having appeared on Sky’s broadcast of Manchester United’s recent 3-2 win against Newcastle, where he and Keane discussed how United can improve following their chaotic 2023-24 campaign.

On top of that, Rooney also recently announced that he would be appearing more regularly on Sky Sport’s podcast, The Overlap.

‘I’m excited to announce that I will be joining my good mate Gary Neville and the team at The Overlap to appear on the channel across some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast,’ Rooney wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Rooney has impressed as a pundit in recent weeks, and seemingly earned himself a spot in BBC’s Berlin studios for the Euros. He is set to join an A-list cast of former footballers and pundits that includes Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand, Joe Hart, Ellen White and Frank Lampard.

The Euros are set to begin on June 14, with Plymouth’s first pre-season match coming on July 9 against Exmouth, with the Pilgrims set to return to training on July 2 – the same day as one of the semi-finals.

With his broadcast commitments coming thick and fast and the 2024-25 season rapidly approaching, Rooney certainly has a lot on his plate.

He’ll also want to make a fast start to life at Plymouth, particularly after how his most recent spell in management ended with Birmingham City ended, with Rooney taking 10 points from a possible 45, losing nine games while winning just two.

‘You can’t knock him for embracing the challenge,’ ex-Chelsea star Andy Townsend to talkSPORT on Rooney’s appointment.

‘I mean it would be very easy for someone like Wayne Rooney to sit on their backsides and do nothing.

‘[He could] just do the television and do that for the next ten years no problem.

‘But [he] wants to prove himself as a coach. I hope that we start to see exactly what Wayne is about as a coach, I really do.’

Plymouth wrapped up their 2023-24 season 21st in the table after a tough season that saw them only just avoid relegation, staying up by just a point.

But it appears Rooney is getting ready for his move down south with he and his wife Coleen going house hunting on the south coast, as they ‘hunt for a luxury pad in Britain’s costliest coastal hot-spot.’

‘Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the chairman and board for the faith they have shown in me,’ Rooney said.

‘This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army

‘I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park.

‘The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.’
