In a close encounter on Sunday, the Mumbai Indians (MI) fell short by 20 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their sixth match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Batting first, CSK posted a competitive total of 206/4 in their 20 overs. Despite a valiant effort, MI were unable to chase down the target, finishing their innings at 186/6.
This loss leaves MI in eighth place on the points table with only two wins, while CSK climb to third place with four victories.
Rohit Sharma’s standout performance not enough to secure MI’s victory
Chasing a target of 208 set by CSK, MI got off to a strong start thanks to a brilliant opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. They reached 63 runs without losing a wicket at the end of the powerplay. Rohit continued his exceptional form and notched up a quickfire century, scoring 105 runs off just 63 balls. However, MI’s batting faltered in the middle overs as they lost wickets in clusters. CSK effectively built pressure during this period, restricting MI’s scoring rate. Consequently, MI fell short of the target by 20 runs.

Kieron Pollard backs Hardik Pandya after Mumbai Indians’ string of losses
Following MIs’ fourth loss this season, batting coach Kieron Pollard expressed his support for captain Hardik Pandya. Addressing the criticism directed at Pandya, Pollard stated his frustration with the tendency to blame individuals in cricket. He emphasized that cricket is a team sport, highlighting the importance of collective performance over individual brilliance. Pollard concluded by reiterating his belief in Pandya’s abilities, recognizing him as one of India’s best all-rounders.
“I am fed up of [us] looking to pinpoint individuals; cricket is a team game at the end of the day. This is an individual who is going to represent the country in less than six weeks’ time, and all are going to cheer him and want him to do well. So it is high time we try to encourage and stop nitpicking and see if we can get the best out of one of the great all-rounders India has produced. He can bat, bowl, and field, and has an X-factor about him,” Pollard stated after the match.
