Arne Slot has challenged Liverpool’s players and fans to show the rest of Europe why their Champions League absence last season was a blow for the whole continent.

The Reds have won seven of eight games under the Dutchman and top-end European nights return to Anfield on Wednesday with the visit of Bologna, the second Italian opposition this season after a 3-1 win in the San Siro against AC Milan.

Liverpool spent last term in the wilderness of the Europa League, losing to ultimate winners Atalanta in the quarter-final. But they are back at the top table and Slot is relishing the chance to witness a Champions League night under the lights at Anfield.

‘I am privileged enough to have worked at Feyenoord with Champions League nights last season,’ said the 46-year-old. ‘People tell me it will be even more special over here.

‘What I expect from my players is after they missed out on the Champions League for a year, when they step out tomorrow I want to see this and feel this. Like, ‘Ah, we missed this’. They have to be ready.

‘I want the same from the fans, I hope they feel this desire to show to Europe again, ‘You missed us because of this’. That combination should lead to a very special night for everybody involved.’

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has missed two training sessions with a foot issue suffered against Wolves but should be OK to make the squad at least, though new signing Federico Chiesa has a minor problem and will miss out. Andy Robertson is fine after receiving a knock on Saturday.
