Dortmund Star Breaks English Champions League Record against Real Madrid

Borussia Dortmund may have surrendered a 2-0 lead against Real Madrid on Tuesday night but one of their players left the Bernabeu with a rather special new record.

The German side scored twice in the space of four minutes in the first half of the Champions League showdown the silence the home fans.

The second of those strikes saw 20-year-old Englishman Jamie Gittens tuck the ball home at the back post after he met Donyell Malen’s inviting low cross. 

Scoring at the Bernabeu is a moment no player is ever likely to forget and Gittens’ goal holds particular significance.

At the age of 20 years and 75 days he became the youngest English player to score against Madrid in the Champions League, beating the record previously held by Alan Smith.

Smith was 54 days older when he netted for Leeds against the Spanish giants in 2001.

Gittens began his career with Reading before joining Manchester City at the age of 14.

He spent two years in Manchester before making the move to Germany, where he has since scored six goals in 51 appearances for Dortmund. 

Unfortunately for Gittens, his side were unable to hold on to the lead they established on the night.

Antonio Rudiger pulled one back when he met Kylian Mbappe’s cross with a bullet header before Vinicius Jr made it 2-2 with a tap in.

Lucas Vazquez put the hosts ahead with a powerful finish before Vinicius put the game to bed with two wonderful solo strikes.
