Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock found dead aged 31

Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has tragically been found dead in a pool in his home in Greece.

The defender was discovered after his wife back in England had not been able to get hold of him for several hours, local newspaper I Avgi reports.

His death was initially reported by Greek outlets including Sport24 and SDNA.

Baldock’s wife reportedly tried to contact him and after several hours without a response, got in touch with the owner of the villa in which he lived in Glyfada, a suburb south of Athens.

After searching the suburban property, they found Baldock in the pool and called the emergency services.

Who did George Baldock play for?

Baldock’s youth career was spent with MK Dons, the same club his brother Sam had played for.

George Baldock made his senior debut for the side in 2009 in a league one match against Brighton.

He would spend two years with the club before being sent on a series of loan spells with Tamworth, IBV and Oxford United.

The Buckingham-born defender would then make the switch to Sheffield United in 2017, where he made a name for himself.

He became a key part of the side that erned two promotions to the Premier League.

The beloved Blades star amassed 219 total appearances for the club, scoring six goals in the process.

Prior to the start of the 2024/25 season Baldock joined Greek side Panathinaikos on a permanent deal.

 

 Why did George Baldock play for Greece?

Geoge Baldock was of Greek descent through his Grandmother making him eligible to play for both Greece and England.

Despite never coming through either of the youth systems, Baldock was called up to the Greek side for the first time in 2022.

Then manager, Gus Poyet handed the Panathinaikos defender his debut in a 1-0 win over Nothern Ireland in a Nations League tie on June 22, 2022.

He went on to make 12 appearances for Greece.
