Lindsey Horan, the captain of the US women’s soccer team, believes most American fans of the sport ‘aren’t that smart’.
Speaking to The Athletic, Horan opened up on dealing with the criticism and scrutiny that falls on the US team given their successes over the last decade, which included two World Cup wins before crashing out in last year’s tournament to Sweden in the last-16.
‘American soccer fans, most of them aren’t smart,’ she said. ‘They don’t know the game. They don’t understand. (But) it’s getting better and better.
‘I’m gonna p**s off some people but the game is growing in the U.S. People are more and more knowledgeable, but so much of the time people take what the commentators say, right? My mom does it!’
‘My mom says, ‘Julie Foudy said you had such a good game!’, Horan continued. ‘And I’m here, just going, ‘I was f*****g s*** today.’
