Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper joined in with a sweary chant as he watched his beloved Leicester comeback victory against Southampton.

Actor David Neilson, 75, was in the away end at St Mary’s yesterday to cheer on the Foxes as they overturned a two goal deficit to win 3-2.

Neilson couldn’t contain his delight after Jordan Ayew scored an injury time winner as he was spotted joining in with the X-rated chant: ‘Two nil up and you f***** it up.’

It’s a world away from the beloved mild-mannered character he plays on the long-running ITV soap famed for carrying his nylon shopping bag.

The clip was posted on X account Cool As Leicester with the caption: ‘Roy knows!’

Neilson first appeared on the cobbled street in 1995 with his train-loving character being given a more prominent role two years later as a loveable, socially awkward cafe owner.

His character became famed for carrying a nylon shopping bag, but there is a heart breaking reason behind the prop.

The actor revealed: ‘My mum sadly passed away just before I started on the show and I wanted to carry something of hers. I also wanted to add my own props and develop the character. The bag carries nothing more than my script.’

He has gone on to become a firm fan favourite and has featured in a number of high-profile storylines, most notably marrying the first transgender character in a British soap opera Hayley Patterson, played by actress Julie Hesmondhalgh.

In 2014 the nation was left in tears when terminally ill Hayley ended her life, with husband Roy lying next to her lifeless body and squeezing her hand in tear jerking scenes.

There was drama on the pitch yesterday too when The Saints had raced into a two goal lead after Cameron Archer converted Ryan Manning’s low cross and Joe Aribo did likewise from Kyle Walker-Peters’ excellent run and pull-back.

The game changed once Leicester winger Abdul Fatawu came off the bench. He provided the assist for Facundo Buonanotte to score and rattled the bar himself after an excellent run and shot soon afterwards.

Fatawu also had a hand in the equaliser, after Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale saved his header at the far post before Ryan Fraser was sent off for pulling Jamie Vardy back as he tried to seize on the equaliser.

Vardy converted the spot-kick with aplomb and Leicester were back level.

Southampton looked to have held on but, with the final kick of the game, Ayew connected with Harry Winks’ low corner and the ball squirmed beyond Ramsdale and the away end erupted.
