Barcelona believe they hold a crucial advantage over Real Madrid in the battle for Alphonso Davies’ signature, according to Spanish media.

The Bayern Munich left-back continues to be the subject of intense speculation. Though the Canadian is loving life under new coach Vincent Kompany, he is still unlikely to sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena.

Therefore, Davies will be free to negotiate with clubs in January and he has no shortage of suitors. Real Madrid have been courting him since last year and there was already talk about a move in the summer, but Los Blancos ultimately decided to take the risk and wait for him to become a free agent.

Jonathan David to Barcelona, Chelsea or Man Utd? The state of play

This has attracted the attention of Man Utd, who believe that signing Davies would be a no-brainer but who also accept that they are unlikely to be a more appealing destination than Real Madrid.

The latest club to be linked with the 23-year-old, Barcelona, do not have these doubts.

Davies to…Barcelona?

Over the past 24 hours, Spanish media outlets have begun heavily associating the Blaugrana with Davies. The defender is a ‘market opportunity’ due to his contract situation and Barcelona are, of course, attentive to the matter given their still-dire financial situation.

Davies is said to be one of at least four high-profile Bosman targets on the Catalans’ 2025 shortlist, but it is as yet unclear whether they actually have a realistic chance of rivalling Real Madrid for his signature.

They do, however, believe that they could hold a crucial advantage in the race should they decide to firm up their interest. According to Sport, Barcelona think that head coach Hansi Flick could be an ace up their sleeve.

Man Utd ‘desperate’ for Barcelona star

The German previously managed Davies at Bayern Munich and the Canadian was part of the squad that won the Champions League in 2020. Contact between Barcelona and the player’s camp has already been established.

Fabrizio Romano recently played down sensational reports that Real Madrid have already agreed a deal with Davies, so it seems that all hope may not yet be lost for Barcelona to pull off a truly spectacular transfer coup.
