New Holstein teenager makes 1-in-6 million golf shot, aces Par 4

CHILTON — Carter Huf was pleased with his drive to begin his round at Hickory Hills in Chilton on Tuesday.

Teeing off from an elevated box Huf, a 16-year-old Mount Calvary resident and member of the New Holstein boys golf team, saw he hit the ball straight and it bounced before the green on the No. 1, 325-yard Par 4.

“It was a really good drive,” Huf said. “I saw the bounce and thought it might have bounced over the green. (Witness Keegan Bohn) and I searched both sides of green and couldn’t find it so I thought why not check the hole because you never know.”

Carter Huf found his tee shot on the No. 1, 325-yard Par 4 at Hickory Hills in the cup for an ace on Tuesday.

Huf’s ball was indeed in the cup, a 1-in-6 million shot to make the albatross and ace a Par 4. According to PGA.com, it’s more likely to be struck by lightning (one-in-555,000) than hitting a hole-in-one on a par 4 or double eagle.

“I started jumping up and down, celebrating,” Huf said. “I was in shock, couldn’t believe it actually happened.”

The ace spurned what Huf called the ‘round of my life’, shooting a 7-over, 78 including an even par 36 on the front nine.

“If I was old enough I should have bought a lottery ticket because never in a million years did I think something like this would happen,” Huf said. “The (ace) seemed to really push me to do better.”

A relative newcomer to the sport, Huf began playing golf as a high school freshman after admitting he wasn’t good enough for more competitive sports such as basketball or baseball.

“A friend of mine got me into it and after playing the whole summer I realized I really liked it and should keep going,” Huf said.

He’s now doing the same for Bohn, who according to New Holstein golf coach Peter Hofmeister, is considering joining the team for his senior year.

The next golf season is a long ways off, but Huf knows this feat will be a boost for the spring.

“It’ll give me more confidence knowing I have the skill to play well,” Huf said. “It’s usually the pressure of the meets that messes me up.”

When he steps into the tee box to start next spring, Huf can honestly say he’s done something on the golf course that is a millions-to-one shot.

One shot can truly make all the difference.
